Crete Holidays remain a popular choice with UK and European Tourists. As well as being one of the most famous Greek islands steeped in history it is also one the largest of the Greek islands in the south Aegean Sea. It is often referred to by the Greeks as the “Great Island”.
Crete is the home to myths such as Theseus and the Minotaur along with Daedalus and his son Icarus who flew too close to the sun.
Heraklion is the capital. The island is separated into four regions: Chania, Heraklion, Lassithi and Rethymno and is around 155 miles( 260Km) in length . At its widest it is 34 miles (56Km) wide and 7.5 (12km) miles at it’s narrowest . It has four mountain ranges. The largest is the Lefka Ori or White Mountains. However ,the Psiloritis range has the highest mountain, Mount Ida (Psiloritis) at 2456m. During January and on occasions up to April it is possible to ski in this area!
Having said that, Crete holidays are more often associated with summer breaks and offer a wide choice, stunning beaches, picturesque villages and panoramic scenery, excellent food, a busy nightlife and a wealth of history and archaeological sites such as Knossos and other remnants of the Minoan Civilization. In addition there are Graeco-Roman ruins, along with both Byzantine and Venetian churches.
So it doesn’t matter how diverse your interests are there should be something to suit everyone. Whether its water sports such as snorkelling or diving or horse riding, golf hiking or birdwatching. Or, if you prefer a slower pace you can find the quieter more traditional beach resorts, such as Kamisana. The resort of Malia is highly recommended for its vibrant nighlife. The shopping should not escape comment either!
If you want to get off the beaten track Crete Holidays can offer great value, particularly if you have the freedom to book out of high season.
