Spain remains one of the most popular travel destinations, often regarded as a home-from-home for many Britains traveling abroad and its not just the Brits that love the “California of Europe”, holidays in Spain are popular with other European nations with over 50 million visitors a year.
Typically, holidays in Spain are synonymous with the traditional beach holiday, but if you can get away from the Costas there is so much more on offer. Spain was once the superpower of Europe and the cities and its grand architecture demonstrate why there are over 400 million Spanish speaking people in the world today.
It’s not only the terrain that varies in Spain, the variance in the local cuisine and wine is also quite diverse with influences from Europe and North Africa. Traditional Spanish cuisine is increasing in popularity in the UK led by the rise of the Tapas bar. This is great news, as the standard fare on the Costas is still dominated by our own fast food culture and there was a time when you wondered if Spain had a cuisine they call their own! Personally my favorite is Pintxos or “Pichos” the Basque version of Tapas. Beats egg and chips any day!
So Holidays In Spain don’t just have to be about the beach holiday, city breaks are equally popular, with the more common destinations such as Barcelona and Madrid high on the agenda. However, Granada with it’s Moorish influence or Valencia, Seville or Bilbao should not be missed. The mild climate makes city breaks more attractive out of the summer season.
Personally, for me, holidays in Spain are about golf. I have played on some of the best courses I have ever experienced in Spain. But equally there are many other activity based sports on offer from scuba diving to horse riding. Trekking and camping holidays are also popular particularly in the Sierras of Southern Spain.
As a largely Catholic country Spain is popular for its annual festivities. You can often find a celebration in the streets of Spain giving honor to their saints.
So explore the real Spain, take the opportunity to get away from the Costas.
